What is Kaposi’s Sarcoma?

Kaposi’s Sarcoma is a rare form of cancer that causes the growth of abnormal blood vessel tissue on the skin, mucous membranes, lymph nodes, and sometimes internal organs such as the lungs or digestive tract. It is caused by infection with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) and is most commonly seen in individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those living with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, or people undergoing immunosuppressive treatments.

Symptoms include:

Purple, red, or brown patches or nodules on the skin

Swelling in the arms or legs due to lymphatic involvement

Lesions in the mouth, throat, lungs, or digestive tract

Shortness of breath or bleeding (in more advanced internal cases)
